Elmi Construction is deeply honoured to have played a pivotal role in bringing to life the ET-302 Memorial, a monument dedicated to the 157 precious lives lost in the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash. Situated on the actual crash site, this expansive memorial, spanning over 40,000 square meters, stands as a powerful space for remembrance, healing, and profound reflection.
While the architectural and preliminary design was thoughtfully conceived by Alebel Desta Consulting Architects and Engineers, Elmi Construction proudly took the lead in the final (non-architectural) design development and held full responsibility for the meticulous execution of its construction. Our team carefully translated a shared vision of remembrance and healing into a tangible landscape, thoughtfully integrating key elements across the site.
This comprehensive undertaking involved the creation of a symbolic flight path, an actual burial site, the impactful main monument, a serene healing monument, a communal amphitheater for gathering, a rock garden, and essential facility areas. Notably, the construction of the four large concrete monoliths, representing the continents touched by this tragedy, and the central memorial wall, inscribed with the names of all 157 victims, demanded the highest level of technical precision and unwavering respect for the deep emotional and cultural significance of this sacred ground.
Beyond the core memorial structures, the project also embraced environmentally sustainable practices, integrating systems such as green roofing, solar energy solutions, and water harvesting infrastructure. Furthermore, as part of a comprehensive landscaping initiative, our team carefully installed over 120,000 plants, thoughtfully prioritizing three native species to reinforce the memorial’s vital connection to its natural surroundings here in Ethiopia.
Elmi Construction approached the ET-302 Memorial project with the utmost technical care and profound respect, fully recognizing the immense emotional weight it carries for the families of the victims and the broader global community. We are immensely proud to have contributed our expertise to create a space that will serve as a lasting tribute, a place of solace, and a powerful symbol of remembrance for all who visit.
